Higher Education Research

Changes in Staff Distribution and Salaries of Full-Time Employees in Postsecondary Institutions: Fall 1993-2003,” by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This analysis of census data provided by 3,186 degree-granting U.S. institutions examines the changes that occurred between fall 1993 and fall 2003 with regard to hiring practices and salaries. The full NCES report is available at no cost on the NCES Web site.

The Future of Higher Education: A View From CHEMA,” by Philip J. Goldstein (EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research, 2006). This study, jointly sponsored by 22 member associations from the Council of Higher Education Management Associations, identifies the forces of change that are building for higher education and seeks to understand their potential implications. Though the study is available free of charge, you must go through the ordering process to gain access to the study. Once the process is complete, follow the instructions provided via email or on the NACUBO Online Publication page.

Think Tank Report on the Future of Higher Education 2006,” by CUPA-HR. This report offers a framework for encouraging and collecting innovative institutional strategies and best practices. The summary of this think-tank initiative includes tools for assessing external and internal threats and factors critical for institutional success. Available from the CUPA-HR Knowledge Center.  

Organizations

College & University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR)CUPA-HR provides research and education to more than 8,600 HR professionals and others interested in the advancement of human resources in higher education. Professional development opportunities include a full range of webinars.

The Conference Board:  The issues-oriented research provided by this business membership organization encompasses HR-related topics such as talent management.

Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI): EBRI encourages and enhances the development of sound employee benefit programs and public policy through research and education. Publications include issue briefs, fact sheets, employee benefit data, surveys, special reports, and books.

TIAA-CREF Institute:  The TIAA-CREF Institute generates research and information on financial security and higher education issues that it disseminates through reports, conferences, web casts, and other forums. Among the many resources available is a series developed to support strategic planning and decision making by higher education leaders that includes books ( Recruitment, Retention and Retirement in Higher Education ); articles and summaries ("Reforming Retiree Benefits: Recent Changes in the University of Pennsylvania's Retiree Medical Plan"; "The Employer Match and Participant Behavior"); and web casts (“Managing the Faculty of the Future: Phased and Early Retirement Plans”; “Finding and Funding the Next Generation of Faculty: An Academic and Financial Partnership”).

National Center for Education Statistics (NCES):  NCES, located within the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences, is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education.

The Segal Company:  The Segal Company offers publications and research related to health care and benefit plan compliance, including two e-newsletters: Capital Checkup and Compliance Alert.

Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM): SHRM serves as the world's largest association devoted to human resource management, representing more than 205,000 individual members through 550 affiliated chapters and members in more than 100 countries.

U.S. Census Bureau: Among the wealth of facts and figures available are statistical abstracts of the United States that offer geographic and industry-specific data.

Survey of Changes in Faculty Retirement Policies 2007, a survey of the American Association of University Professors, reviews the faculty retirement practices and policies at 567 higher education institutions.

Generational Diversity

DiversityInc magazine (www.diversityinc.com) covers a broad range of topics related to workplace culture and diversity.

The Society for Human Resource Management's "Generations Toolkit" (http://www.shrm.org/hrtools/toolkits_published/CMS_020287.asp) compiles articles, research, webcasts, and generation-specific materials.

The Spring/Summer 2007 CUPA-HR Journal (http://www.cupahr.org/newsroom/journal/archive/CUPA-HR_vol_58_1.pdf) includes articles on managing a multigenerational workplace, building an institutionwide diversity strategy, and coping with barriers to workplace diversity.

Organizations:

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, through its Workplace, Work Force and Working Families program, supports scholarship on work-family issues and effective workplaces. The foundation's National Initiative on Workplace Flexibility aims to make flexibility a compelling national issue. Among the foundation's numerous funded projects and research initiatives are the Sloan Work and Family Research Network and the Center on Aging and Work/Flexible Work at Boston College.

The Families and Work Institute is a nonprofit research institute that studies changes to the workforce, workplace, family, and community. When Work Works, a project of Families and Work Institute, is a nationwide initiative to highlight the importance of workforce effectiveness and workplace flexibility as a competitive advantage in the global economy. The National Clearinghouse on Academic Worklife at the University of Michigan Center for the Education of Women  provides resources to support best practices and policies for faculty career flexibility.

Georgetown University's Workplace Flexibility 2010 supports development of a comprehensive national policy on workplace flexibility at the federal, state, and local levels.

Publications:

An Agenda for Excellence: Creating Flexibility in Tenure-Track Faculty Careers is a report published by American Council on Education in partnership with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Families and Work Institute.

Flexible Work Arrangements: A Productivity Triple Play is a report by The BOLD Initiative (Business Opportunities for Leadership Diversity) that highlights case studies of 10 companies that conducted pilot tests of a team-based approach to flexible work arrangements.
